Living Wages
Utah's public infrastructure budget should support living wages. This has been law for Federal contracts since the 1930's. It is time for Utah to join with the 27 other states that have implemented prevailing wage laws at the state level. I supported HB 245, sponsored by Republican Tyler Clancy, during the past session. It would have the state use the Federally recognized prevailing local wages for publicly funded construction. This ensures competition does not hinge on low-ball bids by companies shorting worker pay and helps workers earn wages that help them be able to live in the communities they work.
Unfortunately a majority of the legislature, including my opponent, voted the bill down. It's time to vote for new legislators.
Corporations that do not pay living wages and rely on employees receiving public assistance such as SNAP and medicaid assistance should not be given tax breaks.
