A formative experience was during his eighth and ninth grade years – when his dad, an Air Force pilot, helped transport refugees, who supported US forces, from Saigon to Clark Air Base (Philippines) during the final days of the Vietnam war and Dave and his mom helped with the refugee centers at the base. Dave saw the value of assistance to people with nothing who were able to relocate to the US and become participating and contributing citizens to America.</p><p><strong>Dave also learned the value of America investing in its own citizens.</strong> The GI bill helped his dad get a master’s degree in business and his veteran’s benefits helped him purchase his first home. Dave’s first 'paycheck' job was funded by a USAF program to help dependent kids have opportunities for work in a foreign country – he worked managing tools for aircraft mechanics on the flight line at the base.</p><p>He continued that work ethic through college by developing a house painting business with his brother to support himself and wife – along with an Air Force ROTC scholarship that enabled him to earn a mechanical engineering degree. The Air Force further invested in his education by sending him to graduate school for an Industrial engineering degree. And like his dad – Dave was able to purchase a home with a VA loan helping to keep the down payment low.</p><p>Dave served in the Air Force leading the development and support of USAF aircraft and related systems. He completed active duty at Hill AFB in Utah, supporting fighter aircraft - including certification as an aircraft battle damage engineer. After active duty, he worked as a business developer for two small companies and then joined a not-for-profit research institute that provides engineering services for the Air Force with the goal of extending the life of systems and aircraft. A key help for Dave and his family are the medical benefits from the Air Force that continued with them – independent of his post Air Force employers. <strong>Dave knows first-hand the value of a single payer health system.</strong></p>

He coached youth soccer in Virginia and Utah; he also officiated youth soccer in Utah.</p><p>In the Air Force, he was selected as the Hill AFB voting officer during a time of intense political interest in military absentee ballots. In this "extra duty" he oversaw voter information programs for every unit assigned to the base to ensure over 5,000 military personnel and their spouses had access to their state ballots. He reported directly to the center vice-commander and even provided a progress update directly to a visiting undersecretary of the Air Force.</p><p>After active duty, he served on the board of an Air Force Association chapter that supports active duty and veteran Air Force personnel as well as the Ogden Veterans Home. He also started attending the neighborhood republican caucus in Davis County and was elected a county delegate. <p>In a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rgn0-U2hjYs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">video released on TikTok</a> on April 7th, Dave Calder stated that Donald Trump's threat to destroy the Iranian people is a war crime under the Geneva convention and the United States Military regulations. "This is an impeachable offense yet the entire Utah congressional delegation sits on the sidelines. The congressional delegation needs to exercise their Article I constitutional powers and impeach and remove Donald Trump from the presidency." </p>

<h4>Calder Calls on Utah's Congressional Delegation to begin Impeachment and Removal of Donald Trump</h4>

<p>There are 75 Utah House of Representative Districts. On Tuesday, the Utah Veterans Democratic Caucus <a href="https://www.uvdc.org/post/2026-veterans-caucus-endorsed-candidates" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">elected to endorse candidates in seven of those races</a>, including Dave Calder, running for House District 11. <h4>Calder Points to HB 503 as an Example of a Self-Serving Legislature</h4>

<p>Regarding President Trump's reduction of the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monuments, in a 20 July post on his campaign Facebook page Dave Calder pointed out this defies what the majority of Utahns writing: "The GOP dominated government is pursuing their own agenda independent of what most Utahns want" and quoted Michaelann Nelson from the <a href="https://www.sltrib.com/news/environment/2026/07/20/most-voters-utah-west-didnt-want/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Salt Lake Tribune</a>:</p><p>“It is very contradictive of our findings,” said Michaelann Nelson, a professor of environmental rhetoric at the Utah State University campus in Price. “They’re kind of picking and choosing which Utahns they’re paying attention to and listening to.”</p><p>Researchers with Utah State University surveyed state residents in 2023, 2024 and 2025, finding 61% of Utahns either supported or strongly supported preserving Bears Ears as a national monument in 2024 and 2025, with just 19% opposed or strongly opposed.”</p><p>Dave has participated with the Natural History Museum of Utah to recover fossils found in the Grand Staircase-Escalante monument and noted this area is <a href="https://www.deseret.com/2022/8/21/23313199/dinosaurs-palentology-utah-desert-grand-staircase-university-of-utah-t-rex-tyrannosaur/?fbclid=IwY2xjawTNJkVleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFYdWxpNkJnM2JTUk1kTnJMc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHi0duLE8DUCi0B17qc3VIU8SvCRuaunMaMzrUE3lcy6WwIIcE-Y8gsiWe2wY_aem_hsLyKXAwjYDqu0O6uxMVPA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">visited by scientists</a> from around the globe.</p>

<p>Utah needs a legislature that stands up to Trump and his self-serving authoritarian motives. From <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08/27/trump-utah-redistricting-ruling-00532668" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Politico</a> :</p><p>"President Donald Trump attacked the Utah judge who ordered the state to redraw its congressional maps ahead of the 2026 midterms — a decision that could result in less favorable districts for Republicans in the deeply red state.</p><p>Trump, who sparked a redistricting battle after demanding that Texas redraw its political boundaries to favor Republicans ahead of the midterms, called Monday’s ruling “absolutely unconstitutional” and urged his party to preserve the state’s four GOP-majority districts."</p><p>These are attacks on the rule of law. </p><p></p><p></p>

<p>I will work to repeal SB 174, the "trigger ban" passed by the legislature in 2020 and currently blocked by an Utah Supreme court injunction. This law is a threat to women's health. SB 174 endangers maternal and infant health - researchers have identified consequences of a similar <a href="https://medicalxpress.com/news/2025-12-maternal-infant-health-texas-abortion.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Texas </a>law: "In the more than four years since the state of Texas significantly restricted access to abortion, medical researchers have been studying the health effects of that policy change."</p><ul><li><p>Outcomes worsened for women who experienced pregnancy loss and other serious complications in their pregnancies.</p></li><li><p>Women whose babies were diagnosed with severe birth defects also experienced higher rates of adverse outcomes in their pregnancies.</p></li><li><p>More babies are being born with congenital defects, and neonatal and infant mortality rates have increased.</p></li><li><p>After Texas banned abortion in cases where embryonic cardiac activity could be detected, Texas saw a 12.9% increase in infant deaths, compared with 1.8% for the rest of the country.</p></li><li><p>Infant deaths attributed to congenital anomalies in 2022 jumped by almost 23% in Texas, suggesting that more pregnancies that previously would have ended in termination were being carried to term."</p></li></ul><p><span style="color: var(--color-text-accent-primary); text-decoration-color: var(--color-text-accent-primary);"><strong>I support a women's right to decide what is best for her and her family regarding access to healthcare</strong></span></p>

He stated:</p><p>"More Utahns want the legislature to implement Democratic values, such as fair congressional redistricting. They deserve a legislature willing to stand up to Donald Trump.</p><p>I'm in it to win it - the last time a Democrat ran for this seat was in the 2020 presidential election and they received 40% of the vote. In the prior 2018 election, a non-presidential election year, the Democratic candidate received 45%. That is a great position to start from going into this year. The mood of Utah has changed and in a non-presidential election year with an unpopular GOP we and District 11 will win."</p><p>Besides congressional redistricting, Calder's campaign website lists priorities such as maintaining Utah's mail-in ballot system, addressing rising housing costs, and opposition to SB 174, the "trigger ban" passed by the legislature in 2020, that would outlaw abortion in Utah at any point in pregnancy, with only extremely limited exceptions, and criminalize health care providers.</p><p>Calder, an Air Force veteran, completed his last active duty assignment at Hill AFB. He moved to Weber County in 2018 after living in Davis County for 17 years. House District 11 covers both Weber and Davis counties, as well as Hill AFB.
